Blue Sky Ball is an annual charity event run by an independent volunteer committee of young professionals in order to increase awareness of mental health amongst young Tasmanians. All profits raised by the Blue Sky Ball are donated to Aspire, a Tasmanian charity dealing with mental illness.
The Ball Sky Ball was first held in 2005 and has experienced significant growth in the past five years and is now the largest charity ball held in Launceston for young Tasmanians. The 2010 Ball was the biggest held thus far, with 493 people in attendance helping to raise in excess of $18,000 for Aspire. It is the largest gathering of young professionals within Northern Tasmania.
Mental illness is far reaching and affects 1 in 5 Australian adults in any year (Mental Health Statistics Fact Sheet 2007, ABS), with up to 45% of the Australian population experiencing mental illness at some stage during their life (Mental Health Statistics Fact Sheet 2007, ABS). Research has also indicated that mental illness is more prevalent in young people, with the highest age group at risk being 16 to 24 year olds, followed by the 25-34 age bracket (Mental Health Statistics Fact Sheet 2007, ABS).
Aspire use the funds raised locally to assist our local community in: promoting health and community development, engaging with the community to increase mental health and wellbeing, increasing community awareness of depression and other mental illness and to help reduce the stigma of mental illness in the community.
